This brand new series is created for and only open to members of Girl Scouts of
Northern CA. This is a complete introduction to the basics of sewing!
You can also use your new skills to sew on badges, make a special gift for someone,
or do community service sewing.
Ages 8 and up
B|J|C|S|A girls in 3rd -12th grades
Adults may also register for side-by-side learning

INTRODUCTION TO THE SEWING MACHINE
Safety and explanation of machine parts and their functions, threading the machine, winding the bobbin, troubleshooting techniques, what a woven fabric is, correct pinning, how to measure seam allowance accurately, how to sew a hem, learn to make a casing, then create a drawstring bag using these skills.
SEWING WITH KNITS
What a knit fabric is, what kind of needles to use for sewing with knit fabric, how to change a needle, sew with 2 different stretch stitches, make a hem using the zig zag stitch, create stitch samples to keep as a reference.
How to wash different fabrics, shrinkage and why we wash fabric before we sew clothing, ironing and why it matters in sewing, mending holes with Stitch Witchery and hand sewing.
How to thread the needle and tie a knot, learn 2 basic stitches; running stitch & whip stitch, how to sew on 2 kinds of buttons: shank and sew through, then make a donut or banana pincushion using these stitches.
*Please note: Survival Sewing is offered as a 2 part weekend or 4-part weekday series.
Girls will need to attend all meetings within the series.
